The Quiet Year – Session 1
After the Calamity
Our community of Amnesty awoke, shaken. The civilization we had once known lay around us in ruins. To us, only one slumber had passed – around us, though, a century of decay, death, and tragedy seems to have transpired. Us few who survived set to pick up the pieces and rebuild…

Though our stockpiles of lumber from the nearby forests remained intact, our water reservoir had gone bone dry. And the cat food. We were also out of wet cat food.
Soon after our awakening, our community was rocked by a landslide foretold by an ominous crow flying above the mountains to the north. We should have headed the crows warning – our small settlement was soon besieged by a strange golem. Elders from the settlement were able to imprison the beast beneath on of the mountains. We also carved a second doorway into the mountainside to thwart any golem chasers.
Of course, none of this work in the mountains has been easy – the roaming giant Triads in the mountains seem to have a taste for flesh…
~~~
Today, explorers discovered a second city out in the desert – the Laacranty. They speak in a very strange language that we have found very unsettling. They seem to be lacking in water and speak of an escaped man who has absconded with their rations.
~~~
Improvements to the settlement have made life in Amnesty much more tolerable. An expedition to the southern shores today returned with reports of a still standing lighthouse and ruins of another town. (No survivors.)
~~~
One among us has attempted to reallocate our resources to build a useless bridge across a small lake south of our settlement. How foolish!
~~~
The cats! Oh save us from the giant cats in the wasteland! It seems some of our people have escaped to some form of sanctuary in the middle of the desert. Or have they been lost forever…?
~~~
We have attempted, many times, to explore the river that borders our settlement (putting our recent shipbuilding to use!) Yet no ship that has set out has ever returned – there is a lake downstream that seems to have some mysterious force in it…
~~~
Our town welcomed a visitor today! A little girl named Lana who seems to have come to us from the mountains. She speaks surprisingly fondly of the Triads (those big giants!) I'm not sure if she convinced me during her speech in the town square, but Bill sure seemed to be enthralled by her speech.
~~~
What exciting times! Another visitor – Josh Spring – has arrived from Laacranty (although he does not speak in that AWFUL language of those people – French.) Josh says he has committed a great crime but can't seem to remember what…
~~~
I write to you from the roof of my beloved home – Amnesty has been flooded! There is talk of sending a group of child Scouts to the mountains to investigate.
~~~
OH UNHAPPY DAY! It seems some of our poor scouts have stumbled into some kind of cave in the mountain and become lost! After much discussion, there seems to be only one solution – we must send in the babies.
